After reading Stiggy's post !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . That got me thinking. I've had some accidents, most of them were minor but I've had some close calls that could have been major.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
So, I put it to you fellow opponauts. What is the worst 'Almost an Accident' you've experienced.
I'll start off with mine.
About 10 years ago I was heading somewhere(unsure) north on I-35 with my son in my 1996 Dodge ram 4x4 and it was snowing heavily, the streets were covered from previous snow and the lanes were only identifiable from previous traffic. Traffic had been slow until I had slowly worked my way through the slower traffic with 4wd engaged and was now ahead of it and had cars 1/4 mile in front of me and 1/4 mile behind me. As I slipped under an overpass, I glanced at the on-ramp to see if any traffic was coming and I noticed a full size Bronco/Blazer(am unsure as it's been years) going faster than I was (I was doing roughly 50 in a 55mph zone), and he was just slightly ahead of me. I eased off the gas and just as he moved from the on-ramp to the highway I seen his vehicle do a little shimmy and it turned 90* and started to come across all 3 lanes. I tapped my brakes a few times and my truck's rear end wiggled once or twice, I steered right to change lanes and no sooner than I left my lane he hit the concrete barrier in the middle, head on. Fearing of causing more accidents, I did not stop but did slow down and watched the rear view to see if I should stop and help. He must not have done much damage because he did move his vehicle around some, so I kept going but in my head I thought "Damn, I need to change my undies." I then looked over at my 7 yr old son in the passenger seat and thought "WHEW", that could have been REALLY bad.
Edit:
I know you can't see the comments, but I can!

Well not really an almost accident but...
I was driving in about a foot of fress snow in a friends Acura MDX. The roads were all white, and empty. Suddenly I lost control of the steering wheel, and the car went with the curve/ turn in the road by itself as if it was one of those go-carts at disney world with the rail underneath that does the steering for you. I tried stoping but couldnt figure out what was going on, so I just kept going till it cleared up.
Well I'm sure you guessed what it was by now. A few day later when I drove by the same area I noticed that there was a curb and little sidewalk in the middle of the road in that area dividing the road. :-\ I must not have seen it because of the snow, and the Acura must have been wider, and thank God it was definitely higher.
Only time I've kept a secret about something I did with a friends car.
But go back to my thread it's better :-P

Sometime in December 2003 or maybe January 2004, I was driving to work on a Monday morning when there had been a Carolina ice storm the Friday prior. The roads were dry and seemed safe despite the 20-degree air temperature.
Heading up 77 north, I was moving at about 60-65 in my beat up old 2wd Isuzu pickup when I hit a patch of ice that ran the length of a bridge.
As soon as I hit the ice, I started to fishtail and swerve. There was nobody on the road with me, thankfully. I wound up nearly sideways, looking at the end of the bridge mostly through the driver side window and thinking, "I'm going to flip over and die!"
But I was still counter steering and decided to say "F this." I dropped into third gear and nailed the gas so the tires would be spinning when I hit dry pavement. Instead of flipping, the truck swapped ends and I managed to get stopped — sideways — facing the wide grass median and partially sticking into the left lane. Nobody was within a visible distance of me so I straightened the truck out, took a few deep breaths, lit up a smoke and headed to work.
I quit smoking about two years ago...
